High performance screenings
A structured screening for athletes, masters athletes, and active workers. Musculoskeletal, cardiac, and broader medical risk are reviewed together, with recommendations targeted to your sport and your stage of life.
A high performance screening is a structured pre-season or pre-event review of the factors that influence whether you can train and compete safely. It looks for modifiable risks, identifies medical issues that should be addressed before they become problems, and provides a written plan you can hand to your coach and your physiotherapist.
Who benefits
- Athletes preparing for a new season or a major event
- Masters athletes returning to training after time away
- Adolescent athletes going through periods of rapid growth
- Active adults beginning a new training programme
- Workers in physically demanding roles before a heavier season
- Anyone with a medical history that warrants a structured review before increased training load
What the screening includes
- Detailed history covering training load, injuries, medical conditions, family history, and goals
- Musculoskeletal screen, including movement testing relevant to your sport
- Cardiac risk review (questionnaire-based; ECG and further investigation if indicated)
- Energy availability and nutrition discussion
- Sleep, recovery, and load monitoring conversation
- Sport-specific risks (heat, altitude, contact)
- Vaccination, medication, and supplement review
- A written summary with prioritised actions
Cardiac considerations
Pre-participation cardiac screening is a topic with evolving levels of research and understanding. The screening covers the recommended history and examination components, with onward investigation (ECG, echocardiogram) where the clinical picture or family history warrants. The discussion is open about what screening can and cannot detect.
After the screening
You leave with a written summary that names the priorities, sets recommendations for your physiotherapist or strength coach, and identifies anything that needs follow-up before increasing training load. Where appropriate, the report can be shared with a coach or sports organisation with your consent.
Common questions
How long does the appointment take?
A high performance screening typically runs 45 to 60 minutes.
Is this the same as a school sports medical?
It can be, with appropriate adaptation. For age-group athletes, the screening is paced for adolescents and includes considerations specific to growing bodies.
Will I get an ECG?
Not by default. ECG is added when history, family history, examination, or sport-specific factors warrant it.
Can my club book a group of athletes together?
Group bookings can be arranged. Contact reception to discuss.
